We checked in to the hotel with only minutes to spare before our tour if The Alhambra. When we entered the room it was super hot and there was the most foul odor that filled the room originating from the bathroom. The room was so small that there wasn't any escaping it and it was very unpleasant. We told the staff about it and they told us that while we were gone they would run a machine and the smell would be gone when we came back and it would take 10 minutes to get rid of it. I wasn't sure how that was going to happen and let them know that if it wasn't gone, we couldn't stay there. I also asked why the clerk that checked us in, told me we hadn't paid for the room. I told her I thought I prepaid and she said no.
When we came back the smell was still there. The desk person told us she forgot and that she would go run the machine while we waited in the area set aside for coffee, tea, etc. it was littered with dirty coffee cups, crumbs plates from cake, but it was nice and warm and didn't smell. I told her that I had my receipt from prepaying the room and asked why I was told it was to paid. She said her colleague told her that she found the receipt and it was okay.
She ran the machine and said she promised the smell would be gone. I reiterated that I would not be able to stay there if the smell was not gone and I would need a refund. She told me she couldn't give me a refund on a non refundable prepaid room, but I told her she would have to if I couldn't stay in the room due to the odor. She said she promised it would be better and other hotels would be sold out because they were sold out. She asked me why I was angry. It definitely wasn't her fault, but I just had to let her know that under the circumstances we would deserve a refund.
We were reluctant to go back to the room. We went back and it was still horrible only this time it had a scent of perfume that was emitted through the electric machine that only made the room hotter and worse smelling. The perfume triggered my asthma and allergies, the smell adhered to our clothes and I started looking for another hotel. I found a 5 star and we went on foot to the hotel that was several blocks away and asked of we could see the room and smell it, just in case. It was like Heaven.
We went back and got out belongings and told her we were leaving. She said it was too late and she couldn't do anything about a refund that night. I told her tomorrow would be fine. When we came down she had drafted a receipt for more me to sign for the refund. She tried very hard and it was to her fault. It is a problem there because of the river and according to reviews on Google, aren't the only hotel that has it.
I wished it worked out but it didn't. I am still bothered and have been congested for 2days. It's not healthy for anyone, especially someone with asthma or allergies and hopefully won't ruin the rest of my trip in Spain.
