Apart from some disappointment with the room and generally gloomy décor, we enjoyed our stay - despite very poor treatment at reception on arrival at about 4pm on April 13th. The receptionist was brusque and defensive, almost as if she expected criticism before any was forthcoming. Introduction to our room was perfunctory with no explanation about how to operate heating and ventilation. When we commented on what we felt to be the room's shortcomings, the reply was 'everyone else seems happy with arrangements', We overheard at least one other visitor expressing similar reservations and emphasising that he' was definitely not happy'! Having said all this, reception staff at all other times were polite and very helpful, especially the duty check out man on April 16th. Bar staff, maître d' and restaurant waiting staff all efficient, cheerful and pleasant, striving to make us welcome - though I could have done with less 'Hi, guys', 'no problem' and 'no worries'! These meaningless phrases seem to punctuate almost every utterance. When you see my age below, you'll perhaps understand some of these observations better! We would like to come again but will be more circumspect about room choice.

Just lovely! Hotel, food,position and staff all great. Thanks for a lovely time.Will be back with my husband.

Amazing! Will definitely be back. Room was gorgeous, food was delicious and the staff were lovely. Service for the food was slow but nothing to complain about.

Great location, friendly staff, very clean, great service, a well appointed hotel. I thankfully arrived early enough to park as the parking seems limited for the number of guests and there appears otherwise limited parking close to the hotel.

Great short break in York location ideal , car parking near the city ideal, although on the website it said free parking but then we were told £10 a night disappointed.

A really lovely charming hotel with excellent customer seevice by all levels of staff.Very welcoming indeed

Our overall experience was very good, we had a lovely trip. Staff were very friendly especially over breakfast in the morning. However there is room for improvement as stated above.

As I said earlier, I get the Churchilian theme, but this makes the decor rather dark. I am sure that this could be addressed whilst retaining the theme.

We had a really nice time in York and enjoyed the Churchill very much. Thanks so much for accommodating
